Platelet Concentrate Preparation In The Office Setting: A Comparison of Manual and Automated Devices

Summary: This report summarizes the results of testing performed to assess the platelet yield, increase above baseline platelet concentration, and growth factor release of the automated Harvest Technologies SmartPReP Platelet Concentrate System verses manual technique laboratory centrifuges involving both single and double spin techniques. Scientific proof of bone and soft tissue healing has only been shown using platelet concentrate with viable platelets increased 300% to 600% above baseline levels. The data showed that the SmartPReP’s efficiency in recovering platelets, growth factor levels produced, reproducibility, and ease-of-use was not only significantly higher than any other system (laboratory centrifuge single or double spin) but the SmartPReP was the only system that produced the APC needed for clinical use.
