Review and Reflections about Pulsatile Ventricular Assist Devices from History to Future: Concerning Safety and Low Haemolysis — Still Needed
Volume displacement pumps can produce high blood pressure, so they are indispensable for clinical use today and in the future. In this work, nearly all pulsatile blood pumps used in clinical life are described.
Utility of Neuromonitoring in Hypothermic Circulatory Arrest Cases for Early Detection of Stroke: Listening Through the Noise
Despite a low positive predictive value requiring a high level of discrimination when interpreting abnormal findings, NIOM has high sensitivity and specificity for the early stroke detection. Furthermore, its high negative predictive valve is reassuring for low risk of stroke in the absence of alerts.
Thrombin: A Pivotal Player in Hemostasis and Beyond
This review provides a description of structure and mechanisms of action of thrombin both in physiological and pathological processes. Furthermore, it summarizes laboratory tests that measure in vivo or ex vivo thrombin generation, and presents knowledge on the value of these biomarkers in bleeding disorders, cardiopulmonary bypass surgery, and thromboembolic risk assessment in different patient populations. Finally, this review outlines further perspectives on using thrombin generation biomarkers for research purposes and in clinical practice.
