Arterial Filter Bypass Loop: What Occurs in this Area during Cardiopulmonary Bypass and Are There Potential Patient Implications
The arterial filter is an integral part of bypass circuitry. When introduced, manufacturers suggested a bypass loop for retrograde priming and de-airing, and for uninterrupted blood flow in case of malfunction. Practice has shown antegrade priming and de-airing is possible. This questions the necessity of the loop and presents the question—what occurs in the loop during bypass?
Application of Autologous Derived-Platelet Rich Plasma Gel in the Treatment of Chronic Wound Ulcer: Diabetic Foot Ulcer
The treatment of chronic wounds remains problematic, despite new insight into the cellular and molecular basis of wound healing. Although the aetio-pathogenesis of chronic wounds is said to be multi-factorial, it is evident from literature that effective and adequate wound debridement has produced the most consistent effect in chronic wound treatment.
In Vitro Circuit Stability of 5-Fluorouracil and Oxaliplatin in Support of Hyperthermic Isolated Hepatic Perfusion
To interpret the pharmacokinetics of these drugs correctly, the contributions of tissue or organ clearance and chemical degradation, respectively, to overall drug elimination from the circuit need to be identified.
The Perfusionist’s Role in a Collaborative Multidisciplinary Approach to Blood Transfusion Reduction in Cardiac Surgery
We initiated a data-driven, multidisciplinary effort to decrease allogeneic red blood cell transfusion at our institution. Creative perfusion strategies are an essential component of our program and led to a low transfusion rate.
Patient Directed Perfusion Pressure on Bypass, an Analogy from Electrical Engineering—A New Concept
We present the concept that perfusion pressure during cardiopulmonary bypass should be patient specific, depending on an individual’s resting pre-procedural blood pressure.
