Cardiospecific Sevoflurane Treatment Quenches Inflammation but does not Attenuate Myocardial Cell Damage Markers: A Proof-of-Concept Study in Patients Undergoing Mitral Valve Repair
This proof-of-concept study suggests that intramyocardial delivery compared with the systemic delivery of sevoflurane more strongly attenuates the systemic inflammatory response
Thoratec Corporation Issues Worldwide Urgent Medical Device Correction Letter to Update its Labeling Regarding the Use of the HeartMate II® LVAS Pocket System Controller
This safety advisory is being issued because some patients and caregivers have experienced difficulties with the process of changing from a primary system controller to their backup system controller.
Monoamine Oxidase is a Major Determinant of Redox Balance in Human Atrial Myocardium and is Associated With Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation
Onset of postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is a common and costly complication of heart surgery
Novel Emboli Protection Cannula during Cardiac Surgery: First Animal Study
This is the first animal study evaluating the safety and efficacy of a novel aortic cannula designed to extract solid and gaseous emboli during cardiac surgery.
Prolonged Venovenous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Without Anticoagulation: A Case of Goodpasture Syndrome-Related Pulmonary Haemorrhage
We present a 16-year-old male with severe acute respiratory and renal failure as a result of Goodpasture syndrome, requiring venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) for pulmonary haemorrhage. The patient received no systemic anticoagulation for 25 of 26 ECMO days (20 days consecutively) and suffered no coagulation-related adverse events.
Extracorporeal life support for the neonatal cardiac patient: Outcomes and new directions
Although survival is lower and neurologic complications are higher in premature infants than term infants, cardiac extracorporeal life support including extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation is effective in preventing death in many of these high-risk patients.
ECLS for Preemies: The Artificial Placenta
Current research has focused on low-volume pumpless arteriovenous circuits as well as pump-driven venovenous circuits.
Long-Term Outcome of Children Treated with Neonatal Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation: Increasing Problems with Increasing Age
This review aims to provide an up-to-date overview of medical and neurodevelopmental outcomes in children who as neonates received treatment with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
