I’m doing some perfusion traveling as I am taking my show on the road. As such, every once in awhile I will be dropping a few notes and pictures of places visited, and observations made. In a sense, the beginning of a scrap book on Open Heart Surgery in America (and other places if possible).

A Locum’s ScrapBook: The 24 Hour Cycle

So when NOT in the operating room, whatever does one do? The obvious comes to mind, make your surroundings- liveable for you (not to mention staying connected to the internet- because of countless forms and credentialling issues, banking, etc…), find places to eat, check out the local scenery, don’t get bored and spend too much $$$…

Make friends with “The Hotel People”

In this case, find a hotel that fits your needs. Candlewood Suites in Hot Springs Arkansas is a great place to stay. The clerks at the front desk are your best friends. If you are getting important mail, they get it to you.

If the room doesn’t work, they will get you a better one! Or… if you haven’t talked to another living breathing soul- they are there to chat with. Money isn’t the only reason to choose a hotel- location is indeed EVERYTHING (2 minutes door to door to get to the OR to put someone on bypass for an emergency).
