The MD-CCP Relationship: The Lighter Side…
“Naturally, I drew the metaphor to another inter-species relationship that we are involved in almost every day- the perfusion-surgeon collaboration.”
Editor’s Note:
So once again, an epiphany while online. I saw an amazing video of a human-seal underwater interaction, and I couldn’t help but enjoy the mutual belly-scratchin’ antics between the species.
Naturally, I drew the metaphor to another inter-species relationship that we are involved in almost every day- the perfusion-surgeon collaboration.
Neatly said, is the tail wagging the dog- or is it the other way around?
Of course we all develop our own personal relationships with these apex predators either just in front of us- or facing us from across the OR table. That relationship can either extend to warm and kind respect, mutual in nature, or it can become hero worship, us-against-the-world mentality, unbridled tyranny, obeisance, patronage, condescension, tentative, we’re-the-only-ones-that-know-what-we-are-doing-and-I’m-not-so-sure-about-you, obsequious, boisterous, passive/aggressive, or various permutations and combinations of the prior states mentioned, depending on situational circumstance.
The occasional “E TU BRUTE?” comes to mind as well 🙂
Either way, the tenor of the dynamic is established early, and rarely evolves beyond mutual acceptance and tolerance, but can most certainly devolve in a hurry. Bottom line? You can’t always be “Besties”, but you can certainly garner trust and respect form one-another.
So at one time or another, either before a case, or finishing a pretty tough one, most of us have frolicked together with the surgeon like the two are doing down below 🙂
Enjoy the video. It is cute, and fun…
