Latest IMV Market Report on U.S. Cath Lab Facilities Shows Continued Growth In Cath Lab Case Volume
Based on IMV Medical Information Division’s fifth census of all cardiac cath labs in the US, IMV estimates that from 1998 to 2000 there was a 14% increase to 3.75 million patient cases, both cardiac and non-cardiac. Of these cath cases, 3.4 million are cardiac-related with the remaining non-cardiac cases including carotid, iliac, femoral, run-off, renal and extremity studies. Fifty-two percent of all sites with cath labs perform some non-cardiac cases in their cath suite.
From 1993 to 2000 combined cases, where both diagnostic and interventional procedures are performed in one session, have increased from 3% of total cardiac-related cath lab cases to 26%. “The availability of digital coronary angiography and comparison studies in digital archives has created immediate access to critical data prior to and during a patient study that have accelerated the ability to perform intervention,” noted Mitchell Goldburgh, general manager of IMV. “Furthermore an increase in sites from 35% in 1997 to 62% in 1999 having cath lab review stations connected to a network may be indicative of the use of prior studies in procedure planning. It certainly speaks to a change in workflow that could allow for higher lab throughput.”
Since 1995, the proportion of cardiac cath labs with no capital equipment budgets has remained essentially constant at 15%. Over the same time, budgets under $100,000 have decreased from 37% to 22%, while those $300,000 or more have grown from 34% to 48%. The report describes the distribution of investments planned in information systems and digital archives in addition to cath labs over the next three years.
