The mission of the Center for Perfusion and Extracorporeal Technology is to train competent, focused, and highly-skilled perfusion technicians. Using evidence-based medicine, the program will produce students ready for board examinations and prepare graduates to perform the duties and responsibilities of a cardiovascular perfusionist in a variety of clinical settings.

The Center for Perfusion and Extracorporeal Technology will produce competent entry-level perfusionists in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective learning domains. Graduates will be eligible to apply to take the national certification examinations offered by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.

Additional Requirements:

  • At least four of the following six prerequisite courses should be completed at the time of application in order to be competitive:
    •  2 Semesters of Biology with lab (8 credits) (Recommended: Biology 1&2, Biochemistry, Microbiology)
    •  2 Semesters of Chemistry with lab (8 credits)
    • 1 Semester of Physics with lab (4 credits)
    • 1 Semester of college-level math (Recommended: Calculus or Stats)
  • Additional coursework in the following areas are recommended but not required: Anatomy & Physiology, Medical Terminology.
  • It is preferred that all science courses are completed within 5 years of application to Jefferson. Courses completed over 5 years ago will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.  Courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or above to be eligible for transfer. A grade of “C-“ or below will not be eligible for transfer.
  • Other requirements include:
    • Shadowing experience with a certified cardiovascular perfusionist (CCP) is required
    • If students are missing 1 semester of biology, chemistry, or physics they may attempt to test out of these requirements by passing a challenge exam.

Thomas Jefferson University

Carlow undergraduate candidates for admission to the UPMC School of Perfusion must satisfy all requirements for the Bachelor of Science degree in biology at Carlow, with the following modifications: Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Microbiology and Pharmacology are required, and Biomedical Ethics is recommended. One biology course is waived, as is Senior Experience (BIO 498 and BIO 499). The fourth year of courses is determined by the UPMC School of Cardiovascular Perfusion. Admission is not guaranteed and is on a very competitive basis.
Applicants who already hold a bachelor’s degree may apply to the UPMC School of Perfusion through the Carlow University Graduate Admission office. Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 overall and a 3.0 in the sciences. Students must also provide documentation of shadowing on-pump clinical perfusion cases.
