Penn State Health offers an opportunity to work with varied patient populations in a department with exposure to unique cases and where transplants are performed.

The Perfusionist is responsible for operation and maintenance of the heart-lung machine, cardiopulmonary support devices including intra-aortic balloon pump, ventricular assist devices and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation as well as blood loss management equipment such as Cell Saver and Rapid Infuser.

The Perfusionist will set up, prime, initiate and troubleshoot extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for the infant, pediatric and adult patients.  The Perfusionist performs intra-operative Point-of-Care testing (ACTs, ABGs) for the cardiothoracic patient, and initiates, manages and troubleshoots ventricular assist devices.

As a leader within the department, the Perfusionist oversees the duties and performance of the Perfusion Assistants in the absence of the Chief Perfusionist.

As a Perfusionist in an academic setting, the individual assists with research activities relating to extracorporeal circulation which include data collection, evaluation and analysis on all cardiopulmonary bypass procedures.  Additionally, the Perfusionist contributes their expertise by assisting faculty researchers in design of projects and preparation of proposals.  Other academic support will include developing new research and clinical protocols and procedures, modifying existing protocols, and assisting in preclinical testing of new devices and techniques prior to their use in patient care areas of the Hospital.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S):

Summary:
Operates extracorporeal circulation equipment to provide extracorporeal circulation and cardiopulmonary support.

Responsibilities:

Performs assembly, calibration, maintenance, and cleaning of perfusion equipment and circuits.
Provides and documents clinical perfusion care in connection with a variety of surgical and non-surgical procedures, including cardiopulmonary support or bypass, autotransfusion, and adult extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), ventricular assist devices (VAD), and intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP).
Provides extracorporeal therapies for organ functional analysis, procurement and preservation. Requires travel out of state and on small plane transport. Requires rotating call schedule following department guidelines.
Assists with the development, implementation, and evaluation of perfusion policies, standards, and procedures. May participate in or perform clinical perfusion research. Stays abreast of current and developing advances in field. Participates in the evaluation and selection of new equipment.
Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and take appropriate action.
Requirements:

Minimum Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in related field and graduate of an accredited Perfusionist program.
Required Licensure/Certification: State licensure if required by law. Certified as a Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP). Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider.
Minimum Experience: None required.
Other: Requires travel out of state and on small plane transport. Requires rotating call schedule following department guidelines.
