The Cardiovascular Science Perfusion Program matriculates 35 students each year and awards the Master of Science in Cardiovascular Science degree after successful completion of the 21-month curriculum. The curriculum includes three-quarters of didactic and laboratory education, including a state-of-the-art simulation laboratory, followed by four quarters of clinical education practicums off campus at various affiliated hospitals located throughout the country. The Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and has six faculty members and three support staff members.

Packing slips are sent to the corporate office with inventory/order sheets. Cross check billings with the corporate office within two working days.

12. Responsible to provide field appraisals on staff perfusionists and perfusion assistants. Appraisals are forwarded to corporate office for review. Is responsible for keeping records on staff regarding performance and have any occurrence reports on file. Will be actively involved in hiring and firing of staff.

13. Ensure that the physicians are satisfied with the quality and timeliness of services. Is responsible to react to all physician and/or Hospital complaints logged against the perfusion department.

14. Responsible to update quality assurance database at the completion of each procedure. Quarterly and Annual reports should be generated for surgeons, anesthesiologists, Hospital administration and President.

Will perform procedures relative to the physiological management of patients’ circulatory and respiratory functions during and following cardiac surgery, under the direct supervision of the anesthesiologist and operating surgeon. Must be willing to work flexible schedules. Qualified candidates must demonstrate professional, well-developed interpersonal communication skills while interacting with nursing staff, health care team members, patients and families.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Prepares and operates the heart-lung machine during open heart surgery, including the determination and calculation of bypass requirements for each patient.

2. Monitors equipment closely during surgery for any change in patient’s condition and informs physician(s) immediately of change.

3. Assesses patient for metabolic and respiratory abnormalities during cardiopulmonary bypass and initiates treatment.

4. Provides and/or directs the provision of autotransfusion services, blood gas analysis, activated clotting times, heparin assay analysis, dialysis and mechanical circulatory support.

5. Operates and/or directs the operation of the intra-aortic balloon pump during and after insertion.

6. Correlates and records data obtained during the surgical procedure; including participation in the maintenance of departmental records, reports and charts.

7. Provides perfusion back-up services in the course of Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty as requested by the physician.

Current certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusionists. If new grad, opportunity to acquire certification within 12 months from date of hire.
