Description:
A qualified Director of Perfusion shall be responsible for the management of perfusion services in collaboration with departments of anesthesia, surgery, and nursing administration. Develops and interprets organizational policies for budgets and personnel; assumes responsibility for safe and proper operation and quality control of equipment, techniques, and procedures; and analyzes and evaluates activities to assure established quality patient care.

Will also provide clinical services as a Certified Clinical Perfusionist and share on-call responsibilities with the perfusion staff.

Setting(s):
·       Hospitals: Surgical Services; Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory; Intensive Care or Cardiovascular Intensive Care Units, or any other area of the hospital requiring emergent bypass intervention

Supervision:
·       Direct supervision by the physician performing the specific procedure
·       Indirect supervision by the Regional Perfusion Manager & Executive Leadership

Clinical Role and Responsibilities:
·      The duties of the Director of Perfusion Services include, but are not limited to, the safe performance and management of:
·      Cardiopulmonary bypass / extracorporeal circulation
·      Counterpulsation / Intra-aortic Balloon Pump
·      Ventricular assist devices
·      Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)
·      Autotransfusion / Blood conservation
·      Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC)

Managerial Role and Responsibilities:
·       Manages daily operations of the perfusion department.
·       Develops capital and operational budget for approval by department director.
·       Documents need for changes in staffing/budget and makes recommendations.
·       Coordinates the purchasing of supplies and equipment and maximizes efficient utilization.
·       Contributes to planning goals and objectives for the department and assists the chair/director in coordinating activities and programs.
·      Interviews, selects, and hires qualified personnel. Counsels and evaluates personnel and terminates when necessary. Implements personnel policies.
·      Responsible for work schedules and assignments, on-call arrangements, and emergency changes in collaboration with perfusion staff.
·      Develops productivity goals and measurements.
·      Develops and maintains quality improvement programs for the perfusion department in collaboration with hospital programs.
·      Maintains compliance with regulatory and accreditation agency requirements.
·      Plans and coordinates education of students and facility in-service educational activities.
·      Represents perfusion at hospital conferences and committee functions and serves as an interdepartmental liaison.
·      Performs all aspects of clinical perfusion administration as scheduled.

Qualifications:
·       Bachelor’s degree or higher
·       Graduate of an accredited cardiovascular perfusion education program
·       Certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP)
·       Valid New York State license in cardiovascular perfusion
·       American Heart Association or Red Cross health care provider BLS Certification

Competencies:
The Certified Cardiovascular Perfusionist will demonstrate:

Safe and effective operation of cardiac perfusion equipment
·   Maintains equipment in good working order
·   Informs Biomed of maintenance that needs to be performed on equipment
·   Demonstrates effective infection control practices related to equipment operation

Accurate patient information review
·    Uses at least two ways to identify patients before treating or performing a procedure
·    Verifies that the requested procedure correlates with the patient’s clinical history, presentation and physician order
·    Participates in the pre-procedure process to verify the correct procedure, for the correct patient, at the correct site and involves      the patient in the verification process when possible
·    Participates in a time-out immediately before the start of an invasive procedure or making of the incision.
·    Accesses the patient medical record appropriately
·    Documents in the medical record according to the facility standard/policy

Maintains a safe environment
·    Labels containers used for blood and specimens in the presence of the patient
·    Labels all medications and solutions on and off the sterile field in perioperative and procedural settings

Infection Prevention
·    Practices consistent hand hygiene
·    Uses personal protective equipment (PPE) when required
·    Required immunizations per Division requirements
·    Complies with Isolation precautions
·    Maintains sterile field

Professional Development:
·       Participates in required educational programs.
·       Participates in monthly departmental meetings.
·       Seeks ongoing professional management educational growth.
·       Maintains current certification and licensure requirements for Perfusion practice.

Required Skills and Experience:
·       Highly effective verbal and written communication skills are required to interact with patients, families, departmental units, medical and nursing staff or all essential matters.

organizations, teaching, research, publishing, and/or certification in an area of specialty.

perfusion care as well as necessary perioperative or operating room care to support
the safety and wellbeing of the patient while they are under the care of the Perfusionist.

Purpose of Position

 

The Program Director for the MS Cardiovascular Perfusion Program reports directly to the Dean of the College of Health and Human Services during the formative stages of the program and is entrusted with the leadership and managerial authority of the program. The Program Director is accountable for program administration, curricular leadership, management, mentorship, and oversight of program faculty and staff (including professional development and assignment of university and community service activities). The Program Director is responsible for working collaboratively to orient and mentor clinical faculty while mentoring and advising students matriculating through the program. The Program Director participates in institutional planning, curriculum design and review, and other appropriate governance roles within the framework of the College. As an educational leader, the Program Director works collaboratively with the Dean/School Director to provide support for viability, quality, legal and professional compliance of the specialty.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

• Assume leadership responsibility and accountability for program administration.

• Maintain compliance with program accreditation standards.

• In collaboration with the Dean/School Director, assist in preparation and administration of program budget.

• Manage curriculum development and review.

• Participate in program, department, college, and university governance.

• Implement an evaluation plan for continuous self-assessment of the Program consistent with accreditation standards.

• Develop and implement policies and procedures that govern student recruitment, selection, evaluation, probation and/or dismissal.

• Negotiates affiliation agreements with clinical sites in consultation with the NKU Office of Legal Affairs and General Counsel.

• Provide and implement strategies to facilitate growth of the program.

Position Summary:

Oversee and direct operational aspects of the Perfusion Service as well; as the Perfusion Technology Education Program. Duties include managing daily clinical operations, staffing, financial planning, budgeting, performance improvement and compliance while serving as the lead clinical and technical resource. Position Responsibilities:

  • Operations, Standards of Care, Regulatory Compliance, Quality and Patient Satisfaction.  Manage Perfusion Services: Identify trends and determine and implement/oversee QA priorities. Develop quality standards. Allocate appropriate resources to meet quality and productivity expectation. Develop, implement and monitor plan to enhance patient satisfaction.   • Patient Care/Services Delivery.  Identify needs, trends, and forecasts in order to provide quality patient care within Perfusion Services.  Implement appropriate clinical/operational changes as needed to ensure both quality and safe delivery of patient care.
  • Planning and Goal Management: Develop action plans that meet strategic goals (UIHC, HVC and programmatic/unit); provide ongoing and regular progress reports to HVC director/assistant director.  Accountable for meeting defined operational goals/objectives.
  • Communication/Collaboration: Advocate for programmatic needs with health care leaders; collaborate with medical directors regarding service development, process improvements, and equipment budgets.  Engage and partner with HVC leadership, cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiovascular perfusionists, VAD coordinators, and the ECMO Coordinators/Specialists to identify and implement opportunities for operational enhancement(s).
  • Education Programs: serve as technical and clinical resource.  Work in collaboration with the Education Director to provide clinical education activities and agreements with other educational institutions. Ensure staff compliances are applicable and complete.  Training new/incoming clinical perfusionists.  Work with the Education Director to oversee the Perfusion Technology Education Program [in collaboration with appropriate Departmental and UI Carver College of Medicine leaders].  Work with the Education Director to determine ongoing operational needs as it relates to all educational aspects of the Perfusion Technology Education Program as well as Perfusion Services.
  • Clinical Service/Unit Operations Management: Knowledge of and ability to manage effective and smooth operations within Cardiovascular Pump Services by utilizing various management principles and techniques.
  • Human Resources Management: In collaboration with the HVC Human Resources Manager, hire, develop and manage the performance of staff within the Cardiovascular Pump Services.  Responsible for continuous staff development, annual performance appraisals, developing/maintaining appropriate clinical staffing models/levels, and oversee time management system (ELMS).
  • Financial and Data Management and Analysis: Develop annual budgets for Perfusion Services (operations and capital); provide projections and recommendations. Manage financial data and monitor budget to meet goals. Resolve budget discrepancies. Determine new/improved revenue streams and/or cost-savings strategies to resulting in programmatic growth.
  • Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Understanding of the issues related to the decision-making process as it relates to Perfusion Services; ability to analyze situations fully and accurately, and reach productive decisions.
  • Healthcare Regulatory Environment: Knowledge and understanding of legislation and regulatory bodies affecting healthcare and clinical practices for Perfusion Services.  Ensure all regulatory policies, protocols, guidelines and/or practices for are followed and/or met.

We offer emergency and continued care for pediatric cardiovascular surgery patients from our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit facility based at CMHH. Our surgical team collaborates with outstanding healthcare professionals in our partner facilities to care for each child and their family.

The Perfusionist performs functions necessary for the support, treatment, measurement or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system of the patient. The Perfusionist operates extracorporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to support or replace the patient’s cardiopulmonary/circulatory function and ensures the proper management of physiologic functions by monitoring the necessary variables. Consults with the physician for the selection of the most appropriate equipment and techniques needed for the surgery. Delivers various types of blood products, anesthetic agents or medications and controls the temperature of patients during surgery. Monitors patients’ physiological functions during surgery and in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) such as anticoagulation, blood-gas composition, electrolytes and blood collection and processing. Responds to on-call notification for open heart surgical emergencies in the operating room, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Cardiothoracic Laboratory or other areas of the Children’s hospital.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Provisionally Licensed Perfusionist (PLP) by the State of Texas Department of State Health Services or Licensed
Perfusionist by the State of Texas Department of State Health Services (LP).
• Certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion preferred.
• Bachelor’s Degree and completion of an accredited Perfusionist Technology program with 2 years of experience
required.

Must obtain clinical privileges at hospital and partner facilities before hire date.
