Applies, and provides quality circulatory and extracorporeal technology techniques in the operating room and throughout the organization for patient care. This technology includes but is not limited to: cardiopulmonary bypass; autologous blood recovery/blood conservation, platelet gel, ventricular support; left heart bypass; intra-aortic balloon pumping; cardiopulmonary assist; extra¬ corporeal membrane oxygenation; counter pulsation; myocardial preservation; anticoagulation and hematologic monitoring/analysis; induction of hyper/hypothermia with reversal; hem dilution; hemofiltration; administration of medications, blood components and anesthetic agents via the extracorporeal circuit; organ preservation, and surgical assisting.

 

Job Duties:
• Serves in the role of educator to various groups regarding services rendered and care for patients requiring cardiovascular perfusion.
• Responsible for maintaining organization and inventory of perfusion supplies.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Education:
• Bachelor’s degree required in an allied health program with a strong science background and advanced training in circulation technology from a CAHEP accredited program OR Graduate of Perfusion Training program prior to 1980.

 

License/Certificates:
• Must be certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion and/or the Internal Board of Clinical Technologies (must be completed within 1 year of hire – new graduates)
• Licensed Perfusionist by the Texas Dept. of Health (must be completed within 1 year of hire- new graduates)
• Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) provider
• Advanced principles and techniques of circulation technology.
• Interpersonal skills necessary to work with physicians, hospital employees, patients, family members, and community professionals.
• Must possess exceptional critical thinking skills and deal with extreme pressure and stress

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Perfusion Specialties Manager oversees the functions and operation of the Perfusion Specialties Department within Cardiac and Vascular Services.

 

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

*Prepares components of annual budget including review of staffing, expenses and capital equipment; monitors monthly financial statement and responds to variances as appropriate.
*Hires, orients, trains, counsels and disciplines employees according to Medical Center procedures; conducts employee progress and performance appraisals in a timely manner.
Develops section orientation and training schedules as necessary.
*Schedules daily work assignments and provides clear instructions for assignments; plans/manages staffing to meet volumes while managing non-productive time and overtime.
Develops strategies for operational improvements; reviews and revises productivity standards.
*Develops and maintains expertise necessary to be the technical resource person for the department.
*Evaluates new technology and procedures that have clinical applications; brings forward recommendations for the safe application of these new technologists to the clinical setting.
Performs perfusion procedures as necessary including standard studies, special and complex procedures.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from a school of Cardiovascular Perfusion required.  Masters degree preferred.  Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion required.  License from the State of Nebraska to practice perfusion required.  Minimum of five (5) years clinical perfusionist experience required.  Prior supervisory or management experience preferred.

What will you do?

  • Under the direction of the Chief Perfusionist you are responsible for the operation of the heart-lung machine during surgery and the operation of special mechanical devices to assist in blood and blood products.
  • Operation of the heart-lung machine requires many skills and an extensive knowledge of medicine.
  • The perfusionist must be prepared to deal with many emergency situations under extreme pressure.

Lynchburg General Hospital, a member of Centra Health in central Virginia, has an immediate opening for a self motivated Perfusionist to join two professionals. We have consistently performed 400 plus adult procedures per year for over ten years. This Perfusionist – Cardiovascular Surgery will be responsible for:

  • Monitoring and controlling extracorporeal perfusion equipment during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery and related procedures on patients of all ages, while under the direction of a physician and in accordance with established policies, procedures and standards of practice.
  • Selecting, assembling and preparing equipment and supplies for assigned cases.
  • Operating and maintaining equipment.
  • Monitoring and evaluating physiologic data and making adjustments in perfusion parameters as needed.
  • Administering prescription drugs, blood products and anesthetic agents through the extracorporeal circuit and inducing specified physiologic conditions, such as hypothermia and circulatory arrest, as ordered by a physician.
  • Assisting with inventory management.
  • Assisting with assigned projects in a collaborative cardiovascular team.

 

To qualify, you must have:

  • Graduated from an accredited Perfusion Training Program, with a Master’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Current certification as a Clinical Perfusionist by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
  • Perfusionist licensure through the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Analytical skills to resolve complex problems requiring the use of scientific, mathematical, or technical principles and in‑depth, experienced‑based knowledge.
  • The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and provide empathy in difficult interpersonal situations.

Progressive Perfusion provides contract services for a local hospital with a thriving heart program. We are an all adult practice mainly consisting of CABG’s, Valves, very few DHCA cases, and occasional off pump cases. Waikato District Health Board is part of the Midland Health Region which serves more than 850,000 people. It leads Regional cancer, MRI, Trauma, Emergency care coordination and screening services, and has a 600-bed tertiary and training Hospital in Hamilton, one of New Zealand’s larger cities.

Waikato DHB has two dedicated cardiac theatres with a multi-disciplinary Cardiac team in a teaching hospital environment (associated with Auckland University), that performs approximately 640 adult cardiac procedures annually and the Perfusion team provides a wide range of services to cover these procedures.

You will join a busy department of experienced staff who currently deliver an excellent standard of care and service for Cardiopulmonary Bypass, Cell Salvage, Intra-Aortic Balloon Counter pulsation and occasional Hybrid lab and ECMO provision. Experience in the latter is desirable but not essential as training and necessary assistance will be given.
