The ideal candidate for the position of Chief, Perfusion Service; Duke University Health System will be a clinical expert in all aspects of adult and pediatric clinical perfusion and extracorporeal technology. Our team provides comprehensive perfusion services for neonates through adults, including major aortic surgery, chemotherapy, ex vivo heart and lung perfusion, approximately 250 congenital cardiac surgery cases, over 100 lung and 75 heart transplants, 150 VAD implants and greater than 200 ECMO cases per year with over 100 VAD/ECMO inter-hospital transports. The Chief will be responsible for the overall vision of Perfusion Services for the Health System. Additionally, the Chief will collaborate with Heart Center and Perfusion Team leadership in the areas: operations, programmatic development, the maintenance and application of perfusion technology to enhance quality, outcomes and research. The Chief has supervisory responsibility for 3 Associate Chief Perfusionists (Adult Clinical Manager, Pediatric Clinical Manager, ECLS Manager) the team’s Quality and Safety Officer and our affiliate program’s perfusion leadership. The Associate Chiefs are responsible for the day-to-day supervision and coordination of perfusion services by supporting the Chief of Perfusion with the management of patient care, staffing, personnel and fiscal activities.

Qualified candidates must possess a B.S. degree and have completed training from an accredited perfusion program. Candidates must also be certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion with a minimum of three years as a practicing perfusionist. Progressive leadership experience preferred.  State Licensure is required for all practicing North Carolina Perfusionists.

Children’s Hospital of Michigan is seeking an experienced, certified pediatric perfusionist to providing perfusion services for a dynamic pediatric cardiac surgical program that has been in existence for 45 years.  Cases include the full range of neonatal and infant cardiac surgical repairs as well as adult congenital cases, ECMO, ventricular assist devices and cardiac transplantation.

The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic, organized and dynamic team player, preferably with experience in perfusion for congenital cardiac surgery.  Experience in pediatric ECMO and pediatric ventricular assist devices is desirable.  Non-clinical duties include various administrative tasks as assigned by the Chief of Pediatric Perfusion and the Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery.

As a 228-bed, free-standing pediatric CHM has continued to pioneer advances in medical care for children for the last 125 years, evaluating 153,000 outpatients and 94,000 emergency patients per year and performing 14,000 annual surgeries.  CHM has recently completed construction of an integrated pediatric cardiology / cardiac surgical outpatient center and a new patient tower that houses a dedicated pediatric cardiac surgical operating room and a Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, as well as new Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units. Also, recently completed are a new pediatric imaging center and an expansive atrium/lobby entrance.

The CHM Pediatric Cardiac Surgical Department is a cohesive and close-knit group consisting of two pediatric cardiac surgeons, 5 advance practice providers, three nurse clinicians, two cardiac transplant coordinators, one data coordinator and two administrative assistants.  There are also three full-time, certified pediatric perfusionists, a team of dedicated pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists, and a team of pediatric cardiac circulating nurses and scrub techs.  The successful applicant will pump only pediatric / congenital cases at one hospital and will also become an integral member of a program with excellent patient outcomes, quality surgeons, and a stimulating work environment.

Job Description

Under the direction of the cardiothoracic surgeon or anesthesiologist, sets up and operates the heart-lung machine, physiologic instrumentation and related ancillary equipment to provide cardiac support for patients undergoing open-heart or other thoracic surgical procedures where it is necessary to support or temporarily replace the patient’s circulatory or respiratory function. As the multi-specialty group practice for the faculty of the University of Minnesota Medical School, University of Minnesota Physicians has more than 950 physicians and 1,600 health professionals, providing clinical care in over 100 specialty and sub-specialty areas. The Clinical Perfusionist provides extra corporeal patient care services. Provides safe and physiologically adequate body perfusion to patients during surgery requiring either partial or total cardiovascular bypass support. Determines appropriate flow rate of perfusion during surgery. Determines and prepares appropriate equipment to be used for individual procedure. Maintains inventory of amounts of fluids used during procedure.

This position participates in on-call duties, which may include but are not limited to operation and maintenance of:

The heart lung machine in any area of the hospital.
The cell saver machine in Cardiac Surgery and Transplants.
The equipment for Abdominal Hyperthermic Perfusion (HIPEC) procedures.
The equipment for patients receiving advanced cardiovascular life support at all hospitals.
Requirements:

Graduate of an Accredited Cardiovascular Perfusion Technology Program.
Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion or board eligible may also be considered.
