Oversee and direct operational aspects of the Perfusion Service as well; as the Perfusion Technology Education Program. Duties include managing daily clinical operations, staffing, financial planning, budgeting, performance improvement and compliance while serving as the lead clinical and technical resource. Position Responsibilities:

  • Education Programs: serve as technical and clinical resource.  Work in collaboration with the Education Director to provide clinical education activities and agreements with other educational institutions. Ensure staff compliances are applicable and complete.  Training new/incoming clinical perfusionists.  Work with the Education Director to oversee the Perfusion Technology Education Program [in collaboration with appropriate Departmental and UI Carver College of Medicine leaders].  Work with the Education Director to determine ongoing operational needs as it relates to all educational aspects of the Perfusion Technology Education Program as well as Perfusion Services.
  • Clinical Service/Unit Operations Management: Knowledge of and ability to manage effective and smooth operations within Cardiovascular Pump Services by utilizing various management principles and techniques.
  • Human Resources Management: In collaboration with the HVC Human Resources Manager, hire, develop and manage the performance of staff within the Cardiovascular Pump Services.  Responsible for continuous staff development, annual performance appraisals, developing/maintaining appropriate clinical staffing models/levels, and oversee time management system (ELMS).
  • Financial and Data Management and Analysis: Develop annual budgets for Perfusion Services (operations and capital); provide projections and recommendations. Manage financial data and monitor budget to meet goals. Resolve budget discrepancies. Determine new/improved revenue streams and/or cost-savings strategies to resulting in programmatic growth.
  • Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Understanding of the issues related to the decision-making process as it relates to Perfusion Services; ability to analyze situations fully and accurately, and reach productive decisions.
  • Healthcare Regulatory Environment: Knowledge and understanding of legislation and regulatory bodies affecting healthcare and clinical practices for Perfusion Services.  Ensure all regulatory policies, protocols, guidelines and/or practices for are followed and/or met.

Our faculty is dedicated to promoting excellence in all areas of pediatric surgery in partnership with Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital (CMHH). We offer emergency and continued care for pediatric cardiovascular surgery patients from our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit facility based at CMHH. Our surgical team collaborates with outstanding healthcare professionals in our partner facilities to care for each child and their family.

The Perfusionist performs functions necessary for the support, treatment, measurement or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system of the patient. The Perfusionist operates extracorporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to support or replace the patient’s cardiopulmonary/circulatory function and ensures the proper management of physiologic functions by monitoring the necessary variables. Consults with the physician for the selection of the most appropriate equipment and techniques needed for the surgery. Delivers various types of blood products, anesthetic agents or medications and controls the temperature of patients during surgery. Monitors patients’ physiological functions during surgery and in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) such as anticoagulation, blood-gas composition, electrolytes and blood collection and processing. Responds to on-call notification for open heart surgical emergencies in the operating room, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Cardiothoracic Laboratory or other areas of the Children’s hospital.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Provisionally Licensed Perfusionist (PLP) by the State of Texas Department of State Health Services or Licensed
Perfusionist by the State of Texas Department of State Health Services (LP).
• Certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion preferred.

3. Assesses patient for metabolic and respiratory abnormalities during cardiopulmonary bypass and initiates treatment.

4. Provides and/or directs the provision of autotransfusion services, blood gas analysis, activated clotting times, heparin assay analysis, dialysis and mechanical circulatory support.

5. Operates and/or directs the operation of the intra-aortic balloon pump during and after insertion.

6. Correlates and records data obtained during the surgical procedure; including participation in the maintenance of departmental records, reports and charts.

7. Provides perfusion back-up services in the course of Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty as requested by the physician.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Graduate of accredited perfusion program. Evidence of commitment to continued education and self-development. Orientation to duties to be accomplished within six months. Demonstrates well-developed interpersonal skills and communication skills necessary to interact in a professional manner with nursing staff, health care team members, patients and their families.
