Job Summary:

A perfusionist, is a specialized healthcare professional who operates the cardiopulmonary bypass machine (heart–lung machine) during cardiac surgery and other surgeries that require cardiopulmonary bypass to manage the patient’s physiological status. As a member of the cardiovascular surgical team, the perfusionist helps maintain blood flow to the body’s tissues as well as regulate levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood. It is the perfusionist’s responsibility to manage the metabolic and physiological demands of the patient during the procedure.

The Cardiovascular Perfusionist is responsible for the operation of extra corporeal circulation equipment used during situations where it is necessary to support or replace the patient’s cardiopulmonary/circulatory function.  Conducts preoperative patient evaluations of primarily adult to geriatric patients.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1.       *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2.      *Conducts preoperative patient evaluation to determine the appropriate extracorporeal components to be used.

3.       *Prepares and operates all perfusion related equipment including heart/lung machines, centrifugal pumps, ECMO systems, artificial heart pumps, ventricular assist pumps, intra-aortic balloon pumps, blood pressures monitoring equipment, blood conservation equipment, blood gas, electrolyte analysis and Heparin management systems.

4.      *Performs therapeutic interventions by protocol consistent with changes during perfusion.

5.       *Administers medication, blood components, and anesthetic agents as necessary.

6.      *Contributes in the development and maintenance of Quality Control and Quality Assurance initiatives.

7.       *Assists with the transport of patients needing cardiac pulmonary support, which may require travel by ground or air at any time of day or night.

8.      *Contributes to the development and maintenance of perfusion-related policies, procedures and protocols.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Training and educational equivalence to graduation from a school of Cardiovascular Perfusion required.  Licensure from the State of Nebraska to practice perfusion required.  Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required.

Regular on-call expectations – 10-14 days in a 6 week timeframe; this includes weekend call.  ECMO call/assistance as needed.

We are currently seeking a Staff Perfusionist for our Perfusion department located at Evanston Hospital in Evanston, Illinois.  This is a full-time position and is benefits eligible.  Hours are on a rotating shift basis. Summary:

The Clinical Specialist will be responsible for assisting the Territory Sales Manager, leading clinical evaluations & trials, in addition to collecting, analyzing & presenting data. ·       Develop relationships with hospital personnel (e.g. through casual conversation, meetings, participation in conferences) to make new contacts in other departments within hospital and to identify key purchasing decision makers in order to facilitate future sales.

·       Educate customers on the merits and proper clinical usage of company products by giving presentations and demonstrations using a wide variety of formats and platforms (e.g., slides, transparencies, manuals) to secure purchasing commitments, often with the help of incentive programs and services made available to the account being developed.

·       Observe actual procedures in the operating room of hospital accounts to gain insight into the specific nuances of each physician & perfusionist.

·       Provide front-line management to contract clinical specialist pool, identifying resource needs, deploying resources to accounts, tracking program costs and revenue impact, and meeting annual budget goals

·       Collaborate with R&D team on new product development activities to provide clinical input as well as utilizing clinical network for Voice of Customer activities

The ideal candidate for the position of Chief, Perfusion Services; Duke University Health System (DUHS) will be a clinical expert in perfusion and extracorporeal technology. Our team provides comprehensive perfusion services for neonates through adults, including major aortic surgery, chemotherapy, ex vivo heart and lung perfusion, approximately 250 congenital cardiac surgery cases, over 100 lung and 75 heart transplants, 150 VAD implants and more than 200 ECMO cases per year with over 100 VAD/ECMO inter-hospital transports. The Chief will be responsible for the overall vision and strategy of Perfusion Services for the Health System. Additionally, the Chief will collaborate with Duke Heart leadership in areas of operations, programmatic development, and the maintenance and application of perfusion technology to enhance quality, outcomes and research. The Chief has supervisory responsibility for three Associate Chief Perfusionists (Adult Clinical Manager, Pediatric Clinical Manager, ECLS Manager) the team’s Quality and Safety Officer and our affiliate program’s perfusion leadership. The Associate Chiefs are responsible for the day-to-day operations, supervision and coordination of perfusion services by supporting the Chief of Perfusion with the management of patient care, staffing, personnel and fiscal activities. The Chief is supported by an Administrative Assistant and will report directly to the Associate Vice President for Heart Operations for DUHS.
 

The ideal candidate will possess a M.S. degree and completed training from an accredited perfusion program. Candidates with a B.S. degree will be considered if they also have significant Chief or perfusion leadership experience at a like organization. Candidates must also be certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion with a minimum of five years as a practicing perfusionist. Progressive leadership experience in a similar organization is preferred. State Licensure is required for all practicing North Carolina Perfusionists.
