EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Completion of designated ECMO Training program.  Evidence of commitment to continued education and self- development.  Orientation to duties to be accomplished within six months.  Demonstrates well-developed interpersonal skills and communication skills necessary to interact in a professional manner with nursing staff, health care team members, patients and their families.

We are looking for a staff perfusionist to join our team in Augusta, Georgia.  This account performs 340 total open heart procedures per year, 100 of those cases are pediatrics.  We do all cases except transplants.  We do not do adult ECMO but approximately 4 pediatric ECMO cases per year.   Our 5 total perfusionist team consists of – 1 pediatric perfusionist, 1 pediatric & adult and 3 adult only perfusionists.  Each perfusionist performs 80-90 cases per year.

Job Summary:

As assigned by the Director of Perfusion Services and under the direction of the primary surgeon, the perfusionist shall set-up and operate such devices as the heart lung machine for bypass procedures, ventricular assists devices, intra-aortic balloon pumps, and the autotransfusion device. He/she will also provide surgical back-up for procedures performed in the catheterization lab.  This list of duties shall not be considered totally inclusive of all services provided.

Essential Generic Job Functions (List in order of importance):

  • Under the guidelines of the primary surgeon conducts cardiopulmonary bypass safely in accordance with the department’s policy and procedures and the standard accepted practices of the American Society of Extracorporeal Technology and the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
  • Under the guidelines of the primary surgeon insures all routine and emergency cases are performed according to Policy and Procedure.
  • Under the guidelines of the primary surgeon reviews patient’s medical record prior to each procedure to assess the scope of disease/illness and make appropriate judgments concerning prime selection, additional fluid choices, drug usage during bypass, and techniques of conducting bypass.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills to provide extracorporeal services to patients from adult to geriatric and makes appropriate changes to equipment, supplies, and techniques to best meet the needs of the patient and the policy and procedures of the primary surgeon.
  • Maintains readiness to initiate bypass throughout the procedure.   Prior to bypass completes and records the baseline activated clotting time, baseline blood gases, baseline Cerebral Oximetry data, the autotransfusion checklist, and the pre bypass checklist.
  • Under the guidelines of the primary surgeon makes appropriate responses to the patient’s medical status when using the intra-aortic balloon pump, auto-transfusion, and ventricular assist devices.  Records all responses appropriately.
  • Communicates with the surgeon and the anesthesiologist throughout the procedure as to the condition of the patient.
  • Under the guidelines of the primary surgeon monitors anticoagulation, acid-base, hemodynamics, Cerebral Oximetry, hemodilution, and homeostasis.  Keeps all parameters within acceptable limits set by the department’s policy and procedures.
  • Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.) This process includes communicating with the patient, parent and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
  • Performs point of care blood gas analysis. Proficiently performs patient blood gas analysis, electronic quality controls, liquid quality controls, data management and result reporting.
  • Performs Hemostasis Management utilizing the Medtronic Plus Hemostasis Management System. Proficiently performs patient blood samples, electronic quality controls, liquid quality controls, data management, and result reporting.
  • Completes patient’s record utilizing the department’s computerized record system.  Accurately completes the perfusion record, all required checklists, the cardiac surgery database, and billing forms.
  • Provide coverage at affiliate and partnership locations, when request.
  • Lifts a minimum of 70 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 300 lbs. and stands a minimum of 8 hours a day.
    Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center’s Organizational Competencies.

Knowledge, Education and Skills Required:

High school diploma or equivalent.
A minimum of a degree in perfusion technology, other related science, or equivalent.
Knowledge, Education and Skills Preferred:

3 years of clinical perfusion experience.

Required Certification/Licensing: 

Must be licensed by the State of New Jersey.
For qualified new perfusion graduates, must be licensed by the State of New Jersey with a Temporary License as outlined in NJ Perfusionist regulation 13:35-13:10, with full license by the State of New Jersey to be obtained within one year of hire date.
Preferred Certification/Licensing:

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Perfusion

  • Partners with the Director of Cardiovascular Perfusion and medical team to develop innovative strategies for identified cardiovascular perfusion clinical initiatives. Participates in the development of clinical and research model that elevate the Heart Institute to become nationally and internationally redound cardiovascular perfusion programs. Performs all duties of the Clinical Perfusionist including designs and assembles extracorporeal circuits and equipment for all cardiovascular perfusion procedures.

Leadership

  • Assist the Director of Cardiovascular Perfusion in the day to day operations of the department including but not limited to ensuring adequate staffing by effectively managing case assignments and call schedules, identifying staff job responsibilities, expectations, standards, and professional boundaries to which the Clinical Perfusionists will be evaluated, and assist with recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and disciplining of perfusion staff in collaboration with the Director Cardiovascular Perfusion.

Administration/Service

  • Assist the Director Cardiovascular Perfusion and the Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery with the strategic growth and development of the Cardiovascular Perfusion service line. Assist with the development of goals and objectives for the cardiovascular perfusion program in accordance with the goals and mission of Cincinnati Children’s and The Heart Institute.

Scholarly Activity/Research

  • Participates in research projects.  Applies research methods to design and conduct clinical research on various areas of clinical specialty.   Pursues scholarly activity including publication in peer-reviewed manuscripts in high impact publications.  Some of which should be first or senior authored papers.

Education/Work Experience:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in an allied health field or equivalent with a strong science background, and advanced training in circulation technology from a CAHEP accredited perfusion training program, or an equivalent combination of education and perfusion experience.
  • Must be certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion or must demonstrate equivalent qualifications and competency. Certification must be maintained during the term of employment.
  • Five to seven years of progressive experience as a Cardiovascular Perfusionist

Preferred:

  • Prior functional or team leadership experience

The position duties would include, but not be limited to:

  • Meets the requirements for a perfusion educator set forth in the Standards and Guidelines of the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
  • Classroom education – responsible for approximately 30% of the cardiovascular perfusion curriculum with a major role in simulation training
  • Oversight of the program’s high-fidelity and virtual simulation services (see below)
  • Faculty practice – 40 cases per year to maintain status as a Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP)
  • Participate and assist with student research projects
  • Engage in scholarship activities that contribute to professional issues and program development
  • Engage in service within division, college, university, and national perfusion organizations. Department activities include admissions committee and continuing education programs.
  • Faculty development (enrollment in a doctoral program if applicable)

Specific duties and responsibilities related to the Simulation Coordinator Role

  • Develops, presents, evaluates and refines scenarios for simulation experiences to create a realistic learning environment using low, high and virtual fidelity systems.
  • Creates evaluation criteria for students at varying levels of their educational track.
  • Manage equipment and supply inventories and make recommendations for the acquisition of new equipment.
  • Conduct annual inventories and routine maintenance of equipment, including software updates and hardware repairs.
  • Maintain the standards of institutional simulation certification set forth by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP).
  • Maintains a respectful and professional working environment, incorporating active learning, reflective thinking, and a confidential debriefing process.
  • Performs data analysis to evaluate learning and satisfaction with the provision of services.
  • Orients instructors in lab procedures, location and use of materials, and operation of equipment
