About the Role

This position plays a vital role in ensuring organ viability and optimizing outcomes for transplantation by operating, monitoring, and maintaining perfusion-related parameters  for Normothermic Regional Perfusion (NRP) and ex vivo organ perfusion, including kidney, liver, and lung (EVLP) systems.

The Perfusionist collaborates closely with transplant surgeons, clinical coordinators, and other healthcare professionals to deliver safe, effective, and compliant perfusion support consistent with CMS, UNOS, and FDA standards, while upholding the organization’s mission of saving and healing lives through organ and tissue donation. Responsibilities include:

Performs Normothermic Regional Perfusion (NRP) and Organ Perfusion Procedures
Sets up, operates, and monitors NRP circuits during donation after circulatory death (DCD) organ recovery.
Operates and manages ex vivo organ perfusion systems
Monitors physiological parameters, adjusting flows, pressures, and temperatures as needed to optimize organ viability.
Collaborates with transplant surgeons and clinical teams to ensure the safe restoration and maintenance of perfusion.
Ensures all perfusion procedures follow Indiana Donor Network protocols and comply with applicable regulations.
Documents perfusion data and events in real time to maintain accurate, complete procedural records.
Participates in donor case planning, equipment readiness, and intraoperative decision-making.
Monitors and evaluates organ function and perfusion metrics, providing clinical insight to recovery teams.
Supports surgeons, coordinators, and OPO staff during NRP and ex vivo organ perfusion procedures.
Contributes to donor management strategies aimed at improving organ utilization.
Ensures equipment’s readiness and technical excellence.
Maintains and troubleshoots all NRP and organ perfusion equipment to ensure operational reliability.
Performs safety checks, calibrations, and maintenance in collaboration with Biomedical Engineering and Supply Chain.
Ensures equipment and disposable supplies are available, prepared, and configured for all potential recovery scenarios.
Participates in technology evaluations and assists in the introduction of new perfusion systems and procedures.
Schedule

This position works a rotating schedule of 24 hours on and 72 hours off.

Who We’re Looking For

Bachelor’s degree in Perfusion Science, Cardiovascular Technology, Biomedical Engineering, or related clinical field required or,
A bachelor’s degree with a certificate in Cardiovascular Perfusion.
Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) credential from the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) is required.
Minimum 3–5 years of perfusion experience in cardiopulmonary bypass, ECMO, and/or extracorporeal circulation required.
Experience with Normothermic Regional Perfusion (NRP) and/or ex vivo organ perfusion strongly preferred.

The Perfusionist is a skilled professional, qualified by academic and clinical education, training and experience, who sets up, operates and managers extracorporeal circulation equipment and ensures the proper management of physiologic functions. The incumbent is knowledgeable concerning the variety of equipment available to perform extracorporeal circulation functions and is responsible, in consultation with the attending physician, for selecting the appropriate equipment and techniques to be used. Knowledge, skills and abilities to operate all ancillary equipment needed to complete procedures and necessary. Perfusion Services are provided and utilized for Baptist Health Care at Baptist Hospital and Gulf Breeze Hospital in various capacities. Education and research are a fundamental part of the perfusionist scope of practice. The person in this position works under general supervision of the attending physician and Chief of Perfusion and Autotransfusion Services.

Responsibilities:

Performs, assesses, and manages perfusion procedures.
Responsible for interpretation of physician medication orders for accuracy and appropriateness, informing them of any errors, omissions, or discrepancies and, based on an evaluation of the patient’s condition, suggests appropriate or alternate drug therapy to the physician.
Maintains, monitors, and ensures aseptic techniques as related to perfusion and autotransfusion services throughout procedures, and in addition aseptic technique utilization throughout the institution where appropriate.
Reviews and assesses the patient’s medical history/chart and consults with the surgeon and/or anesthesiologist to obtain patient information needed to set up the heart-lung machine and associated equipment for procedure and patient specific care.
Ensures proper device selection, appropriate patient specific equipment selection, set up, and operation of perfusion, autotransfusion, and ancillary machines as required by physician orders/recommendations and procedures.
Selects, assembles, sets up, and tests the heart-lung machine to ensure that the machine and associated equipment functions according to specifications.
Operates the heart-lung machine to regulate blood circulation and composition, to administer drugs and anesthetic agents, and to control body temperature during surgery or respiratory failure of the patient.
Administers myocardial preservation solutions (crystalloid/blood/temperature specific) antegrade, retrograde, ostia delivery per physician orders/direction.
Controls body temperature according to written protocols or physician instructions during surgical procedures utilizing cardiopulmonary bypass.
Monitors, observes, and manipulates operation of the heart-lung machine and the patient’s physiologic variable such as blood temperature, blood composition, and the flow rate, and adjusts equipment to maintain body functions or anticipated physician requirements.
Administers drugs and anesthetic agents via extracorporeal circuit according to protocols and physician instructions/guidance.
Cleans, performs operator maintenance, and adjusts calibration/parts of equipment used for procedures, as necessary or scheduled.
Assists in other duties as assigned to support the operational needs of the department and organization.
May be required to remain on campus immediately before, during, and after severe weather and/or disasters.

This position requires regular travel to hospitals and donor centers nationwide to perform NRP and support procurement activities. We are seeking a Chief Perfusionist to join SpecialtyCare in West Monroe, LA. The case load averages 100 cases annually, focusing on CABG and valves, no ECMO.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Graduate of an accredited perfusion program with 0 to 10 years of experience
• Certified or eligible for certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion
• Licensed or eligible to obtain a license in the state of Texas
• Must reside within 30 minutes of Clements University Hospital when on-call
