Hiring a STAFF PERFUSIONIST at Aspirus Wausau Hospital  in Wausau, Wisconsin.  Responsibilities include operation of the heart/lung machine and any extracorporeal support of the patient undergoing heart surgery or any cardiopulmonary emergency requiring such support.  Associated clinical activities for CV surgery team include hemodynamic monitoring, auto-transfusion, heart assist devices, ECLS, ECMO (minimal and transferred out), and intra-aortic balloon pump.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

Licensure by the State of Wisconsin as a Perfusionist, or eligible upon hire.

Clinical perfusionists (CP) are responsible for operating extracorporeal circulation equipment, such as Cardiopulmonary bypass during an open-heart surgery or any other medical procedure in which it is necessary to artificially support or temporarily replace a patient’s circulatory or respiratory function. In addition, the clinical perfusionist functions in supportive roles for other medical specialties, including the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) program to assist in long-term support of patients outside of the operation room environment. This includes providing support during eCPR and the regular maintenance of all ECMO circuits; including initiation, termination and support/troubleshooting. The CP has primary responsibility for priming all Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs) including placement and maintenance of VADs, including pump changes and the ability to communicate with patients, family members and others on health care team. The CP solves problems, documents clearly and communicates effectively in writing. They perform and evaluate laboratory tests, adhering to established lab standards. The CP provides these services following all institutional, Perfusion, ECMO, Transplant and VAD protocols. The CP maintains competency in ECMO services by completing annual and any required ECMO education, simulation and written testing. The CP remains competent in the care of heart failure/heart transplant (HFHT) patients by participating in annual HFHT mandatory education, simulation of pump priming facilitated by the VAD coordinator and any VAD vendor education when utilizing new VAD devices or models. The CP participates in vendor education provided on new devices, technology or therapies.

Qualifications:

License/Certification/Registration required Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion required within first twelve (12) months of employment. Once certified, certified clinical perfusionists are responsible for ongoing training to maintain certification. BLS required Education: Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Perfusion Technology. Responsibilities
Relocation/ Sign on Bonus Available

Supplies the physiological support of the heart-lung machine to the open-heart patient on both a routine (e.g., scheduled cases) and emergency basis.

1. Assembles equipment and medications to a particular procedure. Sets-up, primes and de-bubbles functioning unit under aseptic conditions. Verifies operation of mechanical and ventilation systems, including safety devices.
2. Develops preoperative perfusion plan and calculates perfusion formulae based on patient’s medical history.
3. Establishes continuous arterial-venous system on the patient at the beginning of open-heart surgery. Continuously monitors physiological parameters and evaluates perfusion technique.
4. Sets-up, calibrates and monitors in-line monitoring devices. Evaluates data and adapts perfusion plan.
5. Alters perfusion plan during surgery to meet the needs of patient or surgeon, or mechanical failure.
6. Ensures termination of perfusion and support of vital signs when heart and lungs resume functioning following surgery. Documents perfusion activities in patient record. Charges for supplies and services used.
7. Disassembles heart-lung pump. Disposes of contaminated materials, cleaning up non-disposable parts.
8. Maintains instruments, medication and equipment supplies for caseload/emergencies.
9. Sets-up and operates blood conservation systems for open-heart patients.
10. Operates intra-aortic balloon pump for open-heart patients.
11. Provides ventricular assist technology to patient. If roller or centrifugal pumps are utilized, provides 24-hour coverage until assist effort is terminated.
12. Performs regular inspections and routine maintenance of perfusion equipment. Arranges for periodic professional service at appropriate intervals and emergency services.
13. Completes statistics for data-base, research and quality assurance purposes.
14. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
-Bachelor’s degree with 2 years post-graduate school in Perfusion or the equivalent in education and experience required, 3+ years of experience preferred
-Experience with membrane oxygenation, roller and centrifugal pumps, and intra-aortic balloon pumps preferred.
-Keeps abreast of current developments in the field and of quality assurance and liability issues.
-Currently registered with the New Hampshire Board of Registration for Medical Technicians.

Required Licensure/Certification Skills:

Conducts cardiopulmonary bypass or any extracorporeal support performed by the attending cardiac physician. Selects supplies for the procedure, maintains inventory in the OR, sets up equipment /disposables, primes circuits, and tears down post procedure.

Administers pharmaceuticals, blood products and intravenous solutions under the supervision of attending cardiothoracic surgeon or anesthesiologist. Adequately manages and supports patients throughout the duration of the procedure. During cardiopulmonary bypass, the Perfusionist is responsible for monitoring and maintaining adequate blood gasses, temperature management, coagulation, and oxygenation support. Provides standby support for TAVRs and supervises cell saver techs in the OR.

We are seeking a motivated, forward-thinking Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) who has demonstrated skills in leadership, perfusion education, and clinical practice. The position includes opportunities for teaching, curriculum development, scholarship, clinical practice and student advising. All perfusion faculty contribute to the division’s mission of preparing “competent and compassionate clinical perfusionists who are dedicated to quality patient care, employing best practice methods, interprofessional collaboration, and outcomes research”.

Principle Job Duties

Position Details:
