The perfusionist provides all aspects of perfusion (circulatory support) care to patients as needed within the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.

Major Responsibilities

– Responsible for the delivery of patient care as needed during a surgical procedure.
– Maintains and operates cardiopulmonary bypass pump, auto transfuser, extracorporeal life support and will provide assistance to the physicians as needed.

– Facilitates staff education for equipment related to equipment listed above.
-Provides ECMO support and guidance within the OR setting and critical care units.

Daily rounding on all perfusion and Cardiovascular patients

– Assures 24 hour perfusion coverage

– Participates in research to enhance the quality of patient care as needed

1. Assembles equipment and medications to a particular procedure. Sets-up, primes and de-bubbles functioning unit under aseptic conditions. Verifies operation of mechanical and ventilation systems, including safety devices.
2. Develops preoperative perfusion plan and calculates perfusion formulae based on patient’s medical history.
3. Establishes continuous arterial-venous system on the patient at the beginning of open-heart surgery. Continuously monitors physiological parameters and evaluates perfusion technique.
4. Sets-up, calibrates and monitors in-line monitoring devices. Evaluates data and adapts perfusion plan.
5. Alters perfusion plan during surgery to meet the needs of patient or surgeon, or mechanical failure.
6. Ensures termination of perfusion and support of vital signs when heart and lungs resume functioning following surgery. Documents perfusion activities in patient record. Charges for supplies and services used.
7. Disassembles heart-lung pump. Disposes of contaminated materials, cleaning up non-disposable parts.
8. Maintains instruments, medication and equipment supplies for caseload/emergencies.
9. Sets-up and operates blood conservation systems for open-heart patients.
10. Operates intra-aortic balloon pump for open-heart patients.
11. Provides ventricular assist technology to patient. If roller or centrifugal pumps are utilized, provides 24-hour coverage until assist effort is terminated.
12. Performs regular inspections and routine maintenance of perfusion equipment. Arranges for periodic professional service at appropriate intervals and emergency services.
13. Completes statistics for data-base, research and quality assurance purposes.
14. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 2 years post-graduate school in Perfusion or the equivalent in education and experience required, 3+ years of experience preferred
  • Experience with membrane oxygenation, roller and centrifugal pumps, and intra-aortic balloon pumps preferred.
  • Keeps abreast of current developments in the field and of quality assurance and liability issues.

The CHOP perfusion team was recently awarded the AmSECT Pillar of Excellence award. With patient outcomes that are among the best in the world, the CHOP Cardiac Center is a growing program. The Cardiovascular Perfusionist is responsible for the safe set-up and operation of all types of extracorporeal circulation, including long-term ECMO and ventricular assist devices.  In addition, the Cardiovascular Perfusionist should be knowledgeable and proficient in the use of Autologous Blood Salvaging and Point Of Care Testing.  He/she should be familiar with all supplies and equipment utilized by the department. Together with the Chief Perfusionist, he/she should maintain all supplies and equipment on an ongoing basis.   The Cardiovascular Perfusionist should also serve as a source of information for the other medical departments and continuously try to improve the services of the department.

 

Job Responsibilities

In partnership with the Chief Perfusionist and other team members, provides all types of extracorporeal circulation throughout the hospital. The Perfusion Department should provide 24 hours-7 days a week departmental availability and rapid response for initiation of extracorporeal support and related concerns. Set-up of perfusion circuits for ECMO, ventricular assistance, and full cardiopulmonary bypass perfusion should be available for clinical use within 45 minutes of the physicians order, 90% of the time.

Communication/Teamwork

Establishes a good working relationship with all team members and works together to provide quality patient care. As a team, evaluates all perfusion services related to clinical protocols, policies and procedures on an annual basis and ensures the standardization of perfusion circuit assembly for intra-operative cardiopulmonary bypass, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for cardiac support and ventricular assist devices.
In collaboration with the Biomedical Engineering Department, ensures appropriate maintenance and safety standards are performed on all perfusion care technology and equipment.

Technical Excellence

Provides expert pediatric perfusion skills for all size patients undergoing full cardiopulmonary bypass, ECMO, and ventricular assistance in the cardiac intensive care unit or operating room.  Follows established protocols and uses standardized methods when providing this patient care.

Education

Stays up-to-date on current devices and perfusion practices through professional meetings and journals and is dedicated to learning and instituting the perfusion procedures and policies as determined by the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Chief Perfusionist.
Provides professional assistance, guidance, and technical consultation to physician, nursing and other professional staff to assist in continual improvement of quality of patient care.

 

Required Education, Licenses, Experience

  • Temporary or Permanent Perfusionist license in the state of Pennsylvania
  • Graduation from an accredited school of perfusion (must provide copy of diploma/transcripts as proof of academic achievement)

Preferred Education, License, Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Perfusion or related science
  • Specific experience in pediatric surgery and ECMO is desired

Job Summary:

  • Selects, assembles, sets up, test and operates extra-corporeal blood circulation equipment (e.g. Heart-Lung Machine) during medical procedures where the patient’s circulatory or respiratory function must be supported or temporarily replaced (e.g. cardiopulmonary bypass and associated ancillary services).  An incumbent consults with the physician/surgical team to select appropriate equipment, techniques and blood products, anesthetics or drugs to be given to the patient through the extra-corporeal circuit.  Duties also include continuously monitoring for safe clinical management of patient’s cardio-respiratory function and proper equipment functioning, addressing issues as they arise.
  • Work is performed under the direction of a physician, in accordance with the standards of the profession, established Franciscan Health System (FHS) procedure/protocols and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • In addition to considerable knowledge of clinical perfusion concepts, standards, protocols and equipment, work requires familiarity with the operation of membrane oxygenators, centrifugal blood pumps, hemoconcentrators and ventricular assist devices and the ability to keep abreast of new equipment, standards, trends and developments in the field of clinical perfusion.

 

Essential Duties:

  • Manages Cardiopulmonary bypass for all open-heart procedures including cabg’s, valves, and aneurysms/dissections; We do not do transplants, VAD’s, or ECMO.
  • Provide standby coverage for TAVR’s
  • Manage Intra-aortic balloon pumps and cell salvage as needed
  • Maintain quality control on all perfusion related lab devices.

Franciscan Medical Group, as part of Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, is currently seeking a full-time Perfusionist to join our cardiovascular surgical team at St. Michael Medical Center in Silverdale, WA. Job Summary:

  • Selects, assembles, sets up, test and operates extra-corporeal blood circulation equipment (e.g. Heart-Lung Machine) during medical procedures where the patient’s circulatory or respiratory function must be supported or temporarily replaced (e.g. cardiopulmonary bypass and associated ancillary services).  An incumbent consults with the physician/surgical team to select appropriate equipment, techniques and blood products, anesthetics or drugs to be given to the patient through the extra-corporeal circuit.  Duties also include continuously monitoring for safe clinical management of patient’s cardio-respiratory function and proper equipment functioning, addressing issues as they arise.
  • Work is performed under the direction of a physician, in accordance with the standards of the profession, established Franciscan Health System (FHS) procedure/protocols and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • In addition to considerable knowledge of clinical perfusion concepts, standards, protocols and equipment, work requires familiarity with the operation of membrane oxygenators, centrifugal blood pumps, hemoconcentrators and ventricular assist devices and the ability to keep abreast of new equipment, standards, trends and developments in the field of clinical perfusion.

 

Essential Duties:

  • Manages Cardiopulmonary bypass for all open-heart procedures including cabg’s, valves, and aneurysms/dissections; We do not do transplants, VAD’s, or ECMO.
  • Provide standby coverage for TAVR’s
  • Manage Intra-aortic balloon pumps and cell salvage as needed
  • Maintain quality control on all perfusion related lab devices.
  • Cultural Sensitivity and Competence:  Demonstrates proper use of communication tools/materials for effective communication and understands how the culture(s) of patient populations can affect communication, collaboration and the provision of care, treatment and services.  Patient Population Served:
  • Demonstrates knowledge and proper skills associated with the department’s defined specific populations served.

Qualifications
Education/Work Requirements:

  • Certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion or certification-eligible; AND a) Bachelor’s degree in perfusion technology, chemistry, biology or other allied health specialty; OR  b) Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited school of cardiovascular perfusion; OR c) five years of experience as a clinical perfusionist; OR d) an equivalent combination of the foregoing training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) through (c).
    3 years of experience as a certified clinical perfusionist preferred. A strong, new graduate may be considered, must be certification-eligible; employee must become certified within one year of date of hire.
  • Self motivated individual with a comprehensive knowledge of perfusion practices and the ability to work alone.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Must be: 1) certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion, or 2) certification-eligible.
    Current healthcare provider BLS certification.
