We are looking for an experienced ECMO Specialist with at least 3-5 years’ experience and supervisory/leadership skills.   Will perform procedures relative to the physiological management of patients’ circulatory and respiratory functions during and following cardiac surgery, under the direct supervision of the anesthesiologist and operating surgeon.  Performs procedures relative to Extra-Corporeal Life Support (ECLS)/ Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) under the direct supervision of the Director and/or ECLS Coordinator of Perfusion Services. Participates in the treatment plan involving assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and education.   Communicates with the physician and other members of the healthcare team to interpret, adjust, and complete treatment specific care for the ECLS patient.  Must be willing to work flexible schedules. Qualified candidates must demonstrate professional, well-developed interpersonal communication skills while interacting with nursing staff, health care team members, patients and families.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Completion of designated ECLS Training program.  Evidence of commitment to continued education and self- development.  Orientation to duties to be accomplished within six months.  Demonstrates well-developed interpersonal skills and communication skills necessary to interact in a professional manner with nursing staff, health care team members, patients, and their families.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must possess one of the following:

a)    Current Certification as a Cardiovascular Perfusionist (CCP), Board-eligible perfusionist (CP) through the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP), or CCP Emeritus.

b)    License and/or Certification as a Respiratory Therapist (RT) by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC).

c)     Licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)

a)    Doctor of Medicine degree (MD) obtained from an ACGME or WFME/FAIMER approved medical school.

JOB SUMMARY

The Perfusionist provides patient care in the form of operation of the extracorporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to support or replace a person’s cardiopulmonary, circulatory, or respiratory function. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE
Monitors the altered circulatory process, initiates appropriate action when abnormalities arise, and keeps surgeon and other personnel fully informed.
Ensures the sterility and integrity of packaging of disposable equipment used as well as the correct setup and breakdown of disposable and non-disposable and sterile and non-sterile equipment.
Monitors cell saver and operates the heart-lung machine, blood gas analysis machine, clotting time/heparin analyzer, and cardiac-assist devices.
Mixes and administers drugs and solutions required for extracorporeal circulation in a manner that is consistent with industry best practices and established policies and procedures.
Adjusts gas flow and mixtures, administers anesthetic agents, blood, drugs and fluids via the extracorporeal circuit in a manner that consistently results in safe and effective procedures.
Records relevant perfusion information during surgery; analyzes and maintains records after surgery.
Performs quality control/preventive maintenance to ensure accuracy and longevity of equipment. Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.

The College of Health Sciences at Midwestern University invites applications for the full-time position of Assistant Professor in the Cardiovascular Science Program, Glendale, AZ campus.  The candidate must have a master’s degree and document academic experience with a record of teaching along with a minimum of 5 years clinical practice.  Salary and benefits are competitive for this tenure-track position.   Responsibilities include teaching in the practical laboratory, didactic courses, and participation in scholarship and service. Specific areas of responsibility will vary depending on the individual’s educational background and experience.

The Cardiovascular Science Perfusion Program matriculates 40 students each year and awards the Master of Science in Cardiovascular Science degree after successful completion of the 21-month curriculum.  The curriculum includes three quarters of didactic and laboratory education, including a state-of-the-art simulation laboratory, followed by four quarters of clinical education practicums off campus at various affiliated hospitals located throughout the country.  The Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and has seven faculty members and three support staff members.

The perfusionist provides all aspects of perfusion (circulatory support) care to patients as needed within the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.

Major Responsibilities

– Responsible for the delivery of patient care as needed during a surgical procedure.
– Maintains and operates cardiopulmonary bypass pump, auto transfuser, extracorporeal life support and will provide assistance to the physicians as needed.

– Facilitates staff education for equipment related to equipment listed above.
-Provides ECMO support and guidance within the OR setting and critical care units.

Daily rounding on all perfusion and Cardiovascular patients

– Assures 24 hour perfusion coverage

– Participates in research to enhance the quality of patient care as needed

Must have a High School diploma and at least one year of college education and either an associate degree and/or experience in Autotransfusion or a relevant health sector or prior cross training into this job by working as a surgical, perfusion or blood bank technician etc.

You will be responsible for ensuring that the Perfusion Department meets quality standards and promptly responds to open heart surgery, autotransfusion, pump standby, and PRP according to protocol and hospital agreements.  Must be willing to work flexible schedules. Must have a valid BLS Certification from either the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
