Job Description

The Perfusionist reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Operates cardiopulmonary bypass and other life support equipment, to assist cardiac, transplant, and vascular surgeons as they perform their surgical procedures.
  • The Perfusionist – PNE meets the professional exemption under FLSA; but works an irregular schedule.
  • Operate cardiopulmonary bypass circuit.
  • Monitor oxygenator and adjust gas flow as needed
  • Operate centrifugal and roller pumps to maintain adequate cardiac output
  • Monitor blood temperature, O2, CO2, pH, venous saturation’s, and adjust as needed
  • Monitor blood electrolytes, potassium, sodium, and calcium
  • Monitor heparin management of patient while on bypass
  • Cool and rewarm patient as directed by surgeon
  • Set up and utilizes hemoconcentrators on bypass circuits if needed
  • Chart patients’ vital parameters on perfusion record at regular intervals
  • Communicate to surgeon and anesthesiologist any problems, unusual occurrences, or deviations from the norm which may effect the patient while on bypass.
  • Operate cell salvaging system in the O.R. to retrieve, process, and return shed blood back to the patient.
  • Set up and operate intra aortic balloon pump in the O.R. and as patient is transported to the ICU area.
  • Set up and operate cardiac assist devices (LVAD’s, Abiomed) while patient is in the O.R.
  • Set up and calibrate CDI blood management system prior to initiating bypass
  • Must be able to take call coverage for cardiac and transplant procedures on a rotating basis with colleagues
  • Set up and operate PBS (portable bypass system), and be able to initiate bypass anywhere in the medical center.
  • Set up and operate cell salvaging system for general surgery, and assist cell saver techs. when needed.
  • Educate and explain functions of perfusion responsibilities to medical staff, residents, medical students, and nursing staff.
  • Assist medical personnel in the O. R. to facilitate better patient care in the successful completion of the operation.
  • Clean and check heart lung equipment for proper operation.

Position Description:

In the role of Cardiopulmonary Perfusionist you will be working in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As a perfusionist you will prepare and operate Extra-Corporeal equipment including VADs and ECMO for a variety of clinical procedures including heart, lung and liver transplant, and regional chemotherapy including; isolated limb and liver perfusion as well as HIPEC procedures. Provide necessary support and assistance to the surgical team as it relates to these procedures.

 

Responsibilities:

•  Set up, prime and operate appropriate extra-corporeal equipment for use in operating room.

•  Operate and maintain the extra-corporeal equipment and circuit during clinical procedures.

•  Administer blood, heparin, anesthetics and other pharmacological agents into the extra-corporeal circuit during clinical procedures under the direct supervision of the attending physicians.

•  Draw blood and other samples from the extra-corporeal circuit as requested by attending physicians.

•  Monitor patient status during surgery, maintain all appropriate documents, and keep surgical team informed.

•  Consult with surgeon regarding unusual, abnormal, or life-threatening conditions and take appropriate action during surgery.

•  Ensure equipment is clean, properly maintained and is stored in good working order, and that an adequate supply of necessary disposable items is readily available.

•  Transport extra-corporeal equipment to other areas of the hospital as necessary and maintain appropriate records regarding this activity.

•  Assemble, prime, prepare and operate various “CPS/ECMO” systems.

•  Evaluate and recommend purchase of equipment.

•  Assist or train appropriate personnel in regard to monitoring and life support systems used outside the operating room.

•  Provide expertise to investigators during research activities involving open heart surgery.

 

Knowledge – Skills – Abilities

Knowledge of techniques, methods, and procedures of cardiopulmonary perfusion.  Ability to integrate and interpret findings on the basis of general medical knowledge and to exercise independent judgment in relation to the technical aspects of the job duties.  Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Prepares and operates the heart-lung machine during open heart surgery, including the determination and calculation of bypass requirements for each patient.

2. Monitors equipment closely during surgery for any change in patient’s condition and informs physician(s) immediately of change.

3. Assesses patient for metabolic and respiratory abnormalities during cardiopulmonary bypass and initiates treatment.

4. Provides and/or directs the provision of autotransfusion services, blood gas analysis, activated clotting times, heparin assay analysis, dialysis and mechanical circulatory support.

5. Operates and/or directs the operation of the intra-aortic balloon pump during and after insertion.

6. Correlates and records data obtained during the surgical procedure; including participation in the maintenance of departmental records, reports and charts.

7. Provides perfusion back-up services in the course of Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty as requested by the physician.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Graduate of accredited perfusion program. Evidence of commitment to continued education and self-development. Orientation to duties to be accomplished within six months. Demonstrates well-developed interpersonal skills and communication skills necessary to interact in a professional manner with nursing staff, health care team members, patients and their families.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Current certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusionists.  Must have or be able to attain a Nevada State Perfusionist License.

RESPONSIBILITY AND AUTHORITY

Provides clinical and product education to Healthcare Professionals on the full portfolio of LivaNova Cardiopulmonary products. Training sessions may be conducted in person or virtually and must align with all approved instructions for use.  These sessions include coordinating hospital clinical and non-clinical demonstrations, in-person and virtual education programs, intra-operative case coverage, supporting product evaluations and ad hoc training when needed.  The clinical specialist must both work independently within their role but remain highly collaborative with their team and company stakeholders (sales).  Therefore, the individual must be able to work independently, work as collaborator and manage internal stakeholders, as well as manage their own time effectively.

PRIMARY ACTIVITIES

  • Provides clinicians and medical staff clear clinical instructions to ensure continuity of education and support related to all aspects of patient outcomes, in accordance with the product’s Instructions for Use (IFU)
  • Coordinates, directs, and delivers clinical training programs on LivaNova products, as necessary and appropriate.
  • Develops and maintains product knowledge excellence of the LivaNova CP portfolio of products.
    Professionally integrates into all accounts building trust and relationships and establishes strong rapport with customers.
  • Collaborates weekly with key internal stakeholders for installations and evaluations, including the Clinical Specialist team, Field/Technical Service & Account Executives – working seamlessly in order to increase all team’s efficiency and time with the customer.
  • Maintains a positive, proactive, customer service manner with customers and sales personnel during stressful situations.
  • Will foster high trust relationships with customers, and all LivaNova team members.
  • Takes a positive, proactive approach to solving complex and/or unusual clinical/therapy/technical problems.
  • Foresees obstacles and plans accordingly for seamless execution.
  • Assists Account Executives in urgent clinical needs and related product information
  • Responsible for adhering to all regulatory and LivaNova policies to ensure patient safety and company responsibility.
  • Develops and maintain an in-depth knowledge of assigned accounts and customers to include competitor activity.
  • Supports evaluations as needed within and account and supports sales strategies for capital equipment opportunities within accounts.
  • Provides feedback to providers both within operating room setting and outside operating room setting on the directions for use specific to the product and its maintenance
  • Attend trade shows/conferences/congresses to maintain clinical expertise and current market state, as well as meet customer and support product discussions.
  • Meet all requirements and maintain credentialing status in order to access accounts
  • Provides sales support when needed on clinical in-services, training and guidance to current or potential customers.
  • Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities, on occasion, as assigned.
  • Collaborates with regional and global marketing teams as needed on ongoing projects, clinical discussion, program development and product development.
  • Contributes to the development of all education programs both internally and externally
  • Support training of the sales team for new hires, ongoing education and product launches.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to travel primarily domestically (up to 80%) and be available for off hours, urgent issue resolution.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS (UNIVERSAL)

COMPENSATION

HCA North Florida Hospital in beautiful Gainesville has an immediate opening for a staff perfusionist.  The qualified candidate will be part of a four-member team supporting a growing adult perfusion program that includes a diverse case load of CABGs, Valves, Aortic Repair, TAVRs and ECMO.

Provides cardiopulmonary support for patients undergoing open heart and major thoracic surgery. 

After a careful chart review and consulting with the physician, a Traveling Perfusionist will be responsible for safely selecting, assembling, operating, and disposing of the cardiopulmonary bypass circuit and other related equipment for which PDC contracts its services. 

While operating the heart-lung machine, monitor physiological parameters necessary for patient survival and take corrective action when abnormal situations arise. These actions will be communicated and coordinated with the primary surgeon and anesthesiologist involved with the procedure. 

Perform supportive roles for other medical specialties by operating mechanical devices that assist in the conservation of blood or providing both short-term and long-term extracorporeal support. 

Work within the following boundaries: professional training, current professional literature relative to the area of expertise, documented policy and procedures, hospital regulations, program guides, applicable laws, and hospital guidelines pertinent to bypass surgery and the open-heart program. While executing his/her duties in the surgical area, he/she will be under the direction of the primary surgeon. 

 

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, or related. 

 

Five (5) years of experience as a Staff or Chief Perfusionist must include (skills/requirements can be gained before or after University education): Independently operate & troubleshoot with 

multiple Heart Lung machines; Using multiple procedural disposal supplies for surgery; Experience independently servicing multiple hospitals during clinical rotations based on surgery volume at the designated hospitals; and Graduation from an accredited perfusion training program.

Salary Range: $146,000 – $371,300 annually.
