The Clinical Staff Perfusionist is required to complete all annual competency requirements for UAMS and all job specific competencies required to provide safe extracorporeal support including ECMO and mechanical circulatory support therapies.

Responsibilities:

  • Operation of heart lung machine, autotransfusion equipment, intra-aortic balloon pump, and cardiopulmonary support services
  •  Provide services for intrapleural and intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemoperfusion and isolated limb perfusion

The UI Heart and Vascular Center (HVC) is seeking a full-time Cardiovascular Perfusionist to operate Cardiopulmonary Bypass during open-heart surgeries and other medical procedures. In addition, the perfusionist is responsible for other mechanical circulatory support and patient monitoring devices and techniques including: VADs, ECMO, IABPs, HIPEC, cell salvage, point-of-care testing for anticoagulation and other patient monitoring during these procedures.

Job Summary:

Performs those functions necessary for the support, treatment, measurement, and/or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and/or circulatory system of the patient. Executes advanced technical work in the selection, preparation, operation, and maintenance of a wide variety of technical perfusion equipment utilized in surgery, as well as, other circulatory devices and ancillary technologies. Works in close cooperation with the attending physician in extra-corporeal perfusion practices.

Job Duties:

Assesses, plans, and implements the patient care requirements and treatments necessary for cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) assistance pre-operative and post-operative surgery.
Manages CPB by assessing the patient profiles and facilitates discussions with the healthcare team.
Reviews patient records and decides prime selections, drug, and blood additives according to hospital protocols and guidelines.
Selects necessary supplies for the procedure and appropriately assembles and prepares all perfusion equipment (including but not limited to CPB, cardioplegia delivery system, ultrafiltration, cell saver, ECMO, VAD’s, HIPEC, IABP’s and blood management devices, etc.). Documents in patients records.
Recognizes and resolves variances and abnormal situations.
Recognizes when situations are critical to patient and notifies surgery staff to perform medical assistance.
Provides a detailed handoff report which includes significant perioperative events, fluid administration, blood and medication administration, allergies, and a report regarding the nature of the surgery or case. Performs safety checklist on every case/procedure.
Performs dynamic inter-hospital transportation of mechanically supported patients.
Conducts cardiopulmonary bypasses by developing specific perfusion care plans related to cardiac conditions such as heart failure, heart/lung transplantation parameters, and appropriate ventricular assistance in device selection, operation, and support.
Assists in the conversion of support platforms, component troubleshooting and change out, collaboration with transport team members, and coordination of patient care and safety as well as the support of patients in procedural area. Cleans and maintains perfusion equipment according to manufacture IFU’s.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, or any other Science Field and
Successful completion of a formal perfusion training program at an accredited school of perfusion
Less than 1 year
Ability to monitor/assess performance of yourself, other individuals.
Knowledge of cardioplegia delivery systems such as retrograde cardioplegia delivery, anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology.
Knowledge of the blood gas machine and ACT machine.
Knowledge of perfusion/surgical equipment.

The primary function of the Staff Perfusionist is the safe operation and management of extracorporeal circulation equipment (heart/lung machine, veno-venous bypass, ventricular assist devices, extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation) during any medical or surgical procedure where it is necessary to support or replace the patient’s cardiopulmonary/circulatory function (open-heart surgery, liver transplantation, etc.). In addition, the Staff Perfusionist is responsible for the set-up, delivery, management, maintenance, and operation of other relevant ancillary services, devices, and equipment (i.e intra-aortic balloon pumps, autologous blood recovery systems, ventricular assist devices (VAD), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), point of care (POC) laboratory testing equipment). .

This position requires providing service for adults (18 – 64 years), older adults (65 years and older), and the frail elderly in a manner that demonstrates an understanding of the functional/developmental age of the individual served

There is call (after hours, weekends) required. A holiday call is also required.

  • Must be graduates of an accredited Perfusion School unless they began their perfusion career prior to April 15, 1981. If they started their perfusion career before April 15, 1981, they must have 2 years of college (60 credits) with an emphasis in science.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in healthcare field preferred. New graduates, as well as experienced perfusionists, will be considered for employment.
  • Staff Perfusionists are required to be licensed by the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine or the Pennsylvania State Board of Osteopathic Medicine and renewed on a biannual basis.

PAY TRANSPARENCY

  • A reasonable estimate of the annual base salary for this position is $145,000- $160,000 + discretionary annual bonus. Pay ranges may vary by location.

Summary:
Rex CVOR (Cardiovascular Operating Room) is hiring a Clinical Perfusionist to join their cardiac surgery program!

This is highly technical work involving providing circulatory support for patients undergoing open-heart surgery and long-term cardiac and pulmonary support, such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and ventricular assist through mechanical assistance. Teammates will work independently under the general supervision of the Chief Perfusionist.

Responsibilities:
1. Assists surgeons and anesthesiologists in the operating room during open-heart surgery to maintain all patient temperatures and pressures as directed by physicians.
2. Cleans equipment and has it serviced for any malfunctions observed.
3. Contributes to continuous quality improvement which focuses on customer satisfaction, outcomes, and cost
4. Provides patient and support staff training related to ancillary equipment.
5. Reviews patient’s history, physical and heart catheterization data prior to surgery to determine appropriate circuit required. Maintains the perfusion record during each case.
6. Sets-up, processes, and disposes of cell saver supplies as outlined in the perfusion manual for autotransfusion.

Job Description:

Bellin Health is in search of a highly qualified Perfusionist to become part of our team. The role involves delivering high-quality care and monitoring to patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery. Responsibilities include ensuring a safe environment for both patients and staff, guaranteeing the proper functioning of equipment, and keeping necessary equipment, supplies, and medications readily available. The Perfusionist will also support physicians by providing pertinent information, manage the patient treatment area for both emergency and planned procedures, and serve as a consult for perfusion-related patient care concerns.

The call and case load are evenly distributed to ensure an appealing work/life balance with a call ratio of 22%. The projected case load for 2024 is estimated to be around 320 heart surgeries. The variety of cases ranges from CABG, MVR, and MIDCAB to various aortic procedures, as well as TAVRs, occasional non-cardiac cell saver use, and devices like IABP, Impella, and ECMO. The current equipment roster includes S5 heart-lung machines, which are slated for replacement by the Spectrum Quantum, along with Terumo disposables, Cardioquip heater/coolers, CDI 500, Epic EMR systems, Autolog II cell savers, Medtronic HMS, i-STAT, and Cardiohelp.

Perfusionists are employed by hospitals and work within a single organization, which enables the department to offer opportunities for learning and growth.
