Full-Time

The perfusionist must be knowledgeable concerning the variety of equipment available to perform extracorporeal circulation functions and is responsible, in consultation with the physician, for selecting the appropriate equipment and techniques to be used. The perfusionist may be administratively responsible for purchasing supplies and equipment, assuring periodic maintenance of same, as well as appropriate personnel and departmental management. Management duties may include development and implementation of policies and procedures, quality assurance measures and staff development. The perfusionist must be able to operate extracorporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to support or replace the patient’s cardiopulmonary/circulatory function and ensure the proper management of physiologic functions by monitoring the necessary variables. Must demonstrate knowledge and skills to appropriately communicate and interact with patients, families, and visitors of all age groups while being sensitive to their cultural and religious beliefs.

Performance Expectations:

The duties of the perfusionist include those functions necessary for the support, treatment, measurement or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system of the patient.  These duties include, but are not limited to, the safe performance and/or management of:

  • Extracorporeal circulation/cardiopulmonary support
  • Counter pulsation
  • Circulatory support ventricular assistance
  • Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)
  • Blood Conversation techniques/autotransfusion-sequestering of autologous blood products
  • Myocardial preservation
  • Anticoagulation and hematologic monitoring/analysis
  • Physiological monitoring/analysis
  • Blood gas and blood chemistry monitoring/analysis
  • Inducation of hypothermia/hyperthermia with reversal
  • Hemodilution
  • Administration of medications, blood components and anesthetic agents via the extracorporeal circuit
  • Documentation associated with described duties
  • Preparing platlet gel or fibrin glue
  • Isolated limb/organ perfusion
  • Electrophysiological analysis
  • Surgical assistance
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served
  • Assist supervising physician with consults for purposes of gathering information and formulating an immediate action plan but CANNOT produce dictated or written consults
  • Performing perfusionist duties for scheduled cardiovascular cases as well as stand by when needed; be available for call as appropriate.
  • Balloon pump monitoring and setup, as well as long term support operation and setup.
  • Preparing an electronic spreadsheet to be turned in for billing purposes.
  • Performing other tasks as assigned.
  • Responsible for inserting intravenous and intra arterial catheters, cardioplegia and/or defibrillation when indicated according to approved technique and procedure under supervision in maintaining the patient to and from OR.
  • Responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of all cardiac perfusion equipment.
  • Maintains sufficient inventory of cardiac perfusion supplies for volume of procedures.
  • Shared knowledge and skills as appropriate with others on formal and informal basis.
  • Adheres to established policies, procedures, precautions, and documentation required to ensure compliance with hospital standards of care.

Qualifications:

Education/Skills:

High school graduate and completion of accredited Clinical Perfusionist Training.  Basic Life Support (BLS) within one-month of hire.  Obtain 45-CEUs every 3-years.

Work Experience:

Previous work experience as a Clinical Perfusionist preferred but not required.

Certification/Licensure-DUE UPON HIRE

  • American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion Certified or Board Eligible.

The ECMO/ECLS (Extracorporeal Life Support) Specialist operates and maintains the extracorporeal circuit for long -term pulmonary and/or cardiac support. The Specialist functions independently following standing orders and parameters under the direction of the ECLS physician, and participates as a member of the multi-disciplinary team assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating comprehensive care services (therapies).

Epic Cardiovascular will train 8 qualified individuals to be ECMO Specialists. Seven will be reside in Florida and one will reside in Kansas City, Missouri.

Includes PAID training starting in mid March!

Estimated Compensation Range:

**Starting salary of $80,000 with paid training. Salary increases once fully trained and operational.

NOTE:

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The duties of the ECMO (ECLS) Specialist include, but are not limited to: 

1. Operates the extracorporeal circuit, pump, and related equipment.

2. Manages the ongoing process of healthcare delivery to patients and families per institutional policies.

3. Participates in patient rounds and possibly making suggestions to the Physician and ECLS team after assessing patient responses to ECLS therapy.

4. Reviews laboratory and blood gas results and treats within defined protocols prescribed by physician in charge.

5. Circuit adjustments including pump flow, gas exchange, hemofiltration, anticoagulation therapy, or other to maintain patient within limitations set by ECLS physician.

6. Troubleshoots the ECLS circuit and make replacements of circuit components as indicated and usually in the presence of the institutional Perfusionists and Physicians.

7. May assist in data collection and research activities associated with the institution or EPIC.

8. Attends ongoing classes of specific institution and/or EPIC as related to ECLS services.

Specific and ancillary responsibilities of the ECLS Specialist: 

1. Accurately assess pathophysiological changes within the patient during bypass.

2. Manages ECMO flow in relationship to patient management parameters

3. Performs all technical skills with efficiency, accuracy, safety, and in accordance with institutional and EPIC policy and procedures.

4. Operates all equipment according to policy and procedure: differentiate patient vs. patient problems and intervene appropriately.

5. Implements standing physician orders within established guidelines

6. Anticipates, intervenes, and manages crisis/emergency situations according to policy and

procedure; maintains professional composure.

7. Demonstrates effective assessment of the ECLS circuit.

8. Performs, manages, and troubleshoots anticoagulation per institutional protocol.

9. Demonstrates proper blood sampling techniques from the ECLS circuit.

10. Documents appropriately on all ECMO records including OnCloud EMR.

11. Demonstrates administration of all blood products into the ECLS circuit

12. Manages laboratory results and perform appropriate interventions as related by ECLS therapy.

13. Assesses clinical status of the patient, including vital signs and discuss possible intervention.

14. Provides feedback for improved patient outcomes to other care providers

15. Assimilates information and then provide documentation of the interventions that provide the chosen integrated plan of care.

16. Anticipates and communicates patient needs that will require intervention by other members of the care team.

17. Anticipates learning needs for patients/families/ and staff.

18. Assists others in defining learning outcomes and appropriate interventions.

19. Uses innovation in individualizing patient/family teaching to the individual patient/family needs.

20. Participates during patient management discussions and suggest clinical management option during discussions.

21. Maintains qualification licensure as per those licensure requirements.

22. Maintains communication within institutional and EPIC standards and policies for delivery of ECLS care.

23. Maintains competencies in current topics of ECLS thru institutional journals, Internet, and networking with care providers of similar nature.

24. Punctuality, professional respect to all other team members, and professional behavior must be maintained at all times.

Personal demands on the ECLS Specialist include:

1. Participate in “on-call” scheduling, which is provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

2. Must wear a pager or cell phone during “on-call” times and be available to respond within the designated call response time of the hospital.

3. Must be in good physical condition.

4. Must be able to endure long hours, both mentally and physically

5. Physical requirements include standing for long periods of time, lifting, stooping, sitting, stretching, and other bodily demands for extended intervals.

6. Exposure to noxious gases and bodily fluids with risk of infections and diseases.

7. Remain current on present perfusion technology procedures, techniques, and literature.

8. Establish and maintain a professional demeanor.

9. Re-enforce the integrity of Epic CV Services.

10. When directed, serve in supportive capacity for all clinical accounts relative to vacation relief, sick leave, and temporary staffing.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

A. Registered Nurse or Registered Respiratory Therapist licensed in the state of employment.
B. Minimum of two (2) years intensive care or related experience.
C. Satisfactory completion of an ECLS Training Course (Epic provided)
D. Satisfactory completion of the Perfusion.com clinical assessment examination.
F. Full understanding of circuit components utilized for the service of a particular ECLS center.
G. Ability to remain calm under pressure and a mechanical inclination is preferred.

Role Description

This is a full-time on-site role for a Perfusionist at West Coast Perfusion located in the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. The Perfusionist will be responsible for operating heart-lung machines during cardiac surgeries, monitoring and adjusting the patient’s blood circulation and composition, and providing support to the surgical team to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Epic Cardiovascular Staffing is looking for a full-time Staff Perfusionist to join their team in the Valley Health System, Las Vegas, Nevada. This individual will perform procedures relative to the physiological management of patients’ circulatory and respiratory functions during cardiac surgery, under the direct supervision of the anesthesiologist and operating surgeon. The Staff Perfusionist will ultimately join a staff of seven perfusionists.

This position involves responsibilities at three locations, Valley Hospital, Spring Valley Hospital, and Summerlin Hospital. These locations are approximately 10 miles apart and offer a comprehensive range of advanced cardiovascular and surgical services. An additional Valley Health System heart program is scheduled to open in 2026 at a new facility in West Henderson, a high-growth area near the Raiders Football Stadium.

Requirements:

  • Candidate must be certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (unfortunately due to licensure issues, new grads will NOT be considered.
  • A Nevada Perfusion License will be required (Epic financed).

Qualifications:

Summary:

The Clinical Specialist will be responsible for assisting the Territory Sales Manager, leading clinical evaluations & trials, in addition to collecting, analyzing & presenting data. Responsibilities will also include giving clinical presentations at professional meetings, cardiothoracic residency/fellowship programs and perfusion schools. The Clinical Specialist will assist the Territory Sales Manager selling, promoting and providing strategic account management of all of Quest’s products. These sales will drive revenue growth in the defined geographic territory by new account development and the expansion of existing accounts, to meet sales quotas based on the company’s sales goals. The Clinical Specialist will report to the Director of MPS Clinical Sales.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a key business partner to Quest clients in the field, develop & maintain strong relationships. Promptly respond to customer needs & complaints regarding products & service.
  • Participate in the coordination of clinical evaluations & trials.
  • Collect, analyze & present data.
  • Present at professional meetings, cardiothoracic residency & fellowship programs & perfusion schools.
  • Acts as a clinical liaison to the R & D team.
  • Attend Industry tradeshows.
  • Assist Territory Sales Manager by scheduling meetings with current and potential customers to fulfill revenue and unit growth objectives assigned by company on a monthly/quarterly/annual basis.
  • Assist Territory Sales Manager in developing & implementing business plans (i.e., weekly, quarterly, monthly) along with providing timely, accurate forecasting by analyzing quarterly and monthly sales figures and reports identifying the needs of particular accounts and discussing issues with the Territory Sales Manager to help the organization achieve its annual sales goals.
  • Determine the needs (e.g., product and pricing), goals, product usage, and types of cases handled by specific customers by meeting with and asking in-depth questions of physicians and other hospital personnel to learn which Quest products can best address their specific needs.
  • Develop relationships with hospital personnel (e.g. through casual conversation, meetings, participation in conferences) to make new contacts in other departments within hospital and to identify key purchasing decision makers in order to facilitate future sales.
  • Educate customers on the merits and proper clinical usage of company products by giving presentations and demonstrations using a wide variety of formats and platforms (e.g., slides, transparencies, manuals) to secure purchasing commitments, often with the help of incentive programs and services made available to the account being developed.
  • Observe actual procedures in the operating room of hospital accounts to gain insight into the specific nuances of each physician & perfusionist for a successful evaluation.

Qualifications:

  • CCP preferred. Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent medical device experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years medical device experience and clinical support of mechanical circulatory systems.
  • Demonstrated record of clinical expertise.
  • Solid understanding of specified functional area, and application of business concepts, procedures and practices.
  • Capable of managing time and resources within the assigned territory in conjunction with near-term plans to ensure the territory’s objectives are achieved.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital credentialing systems, governmental regulations and maintaining honesty, integrity and excellent work ethics.
  • Be able to enhance teamwork within the region and maintain a collaborative relationship with all levels of the organization.
  • Carry out operations within an established budget.
  • Must have sound knowledge of a variety of alternatives and their impact on the business, and be able to exercise judgment in selecting innovative and practical methods to achieve problem resolution in the assigned territory.
  • Establish and cultivate an extensive network of support to facilitate completion of assignments.
  • Ability to influence middle & upper management and external customers on technical as well as new business solutions.
  • Participate in the development of less experienced staff by setting an examples, providing guidance and offering counsel. May lead a project team and participate in determining goals and objectives for projects.
  • Basic to intermediate skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, SharePoint, Outlook, Wufoo and familiarity with CRM tools.

The selected candidate will ensure that the Perfusion Department meets quality standards within the resources available.  Ensures that the Perfusion Department responds to Open Heart Surgery, Autotransfusion, Pump Standby and IABP according to protocols and Hospital agreement.  Performs procedures relative to the physiological management of patients’ circulatory and respiratory functioning during and following cardiac surgery, under the direct supervision of the anesthesiologist and operating surgeon.

Must be willing to work flexible schedules. Demonstrate well-developed interpersonal skills and communication skills necessary to interact in a professional manner with nursing staff, health care team members, patient, and families. Must have bachelor’s or master’s degree and be certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion and have current BLS certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
